A Potential Composite Material for Possible Applications in Earth Reinforcement CIGR Journal
M. Z. Hossain.
It is evident that the inadequate frictional resistance and meager cohesion of conventional reinforcements in reinforced earth structures such as geogrids, geosynthetics and wire meshes are serious shortcomings that not only impose constraints in structural designs, but also affect the stability of reinforced earth structures. In this regard, the benefits of earth reinforcing materials in improving the interaction resistances are eminent. For the reinforcement to be effective, two conditions need to be satisfied i.e. it must possess enough strength to withstand tension failure and adhesion failure. This paper highlights some experimental results on the performance behavior of thin cementitious composite elements reinforced by wire meshes under shear tests...

Impact of Tropical Cyclones on Rural Infrastructures in Bangladesh CIGR Journal
M. Z. Hossain; M. T. Islam; T. Sakai; M. Ishida.
Tropical cyclone has a great impact on agricultures and rural infrastructures such as shelter, sanitation, drinking water, electricity supplies and transportation services. It causes huge damages not only to livelihoods but also to engineering structures like rural roads, dams, embankments, farm buildings and dairy houses etc. This paper depicts the results of recent studies on impact of tropical cyclones on rural and agricultural engineering infrastructures in Bangladesh based on the field visits to cyclone sites, collected data and information on damages and death of peoples. Necessary data related to tropical cyclones are obtained from available publications and news paper information reported in the recent years and previously. It is found that, in...

Severity of Flood Embankments in Bangladesh and Its Remedial Approach CIGR Journal
M. Z. Hossain; T. Sakai.
Construction of earthen flood control embankments is an established practice in Bangladesh for protecting people’s lives and homes, agriculture and infrastructures. The paper reports the results of recent status of river and flood control embankments in Bangladesh based on the field visits to embankments site, collected data and information on failure and on-service embankments during field visits, necessary data related to embankments construction practice obtained from available publications and news paper information reported in the year 2007. It studies the basic features and characteristics of floods and flood hazards, and reviews the design & construction practices followed. Several cases of successful and unsuccessful river and flood control...

Vetiver Grass as a Potential Resource for Rural Development in Bangladesh CIGR Journal
M. P. Islam; Md. Khairul Hassan Bhuiyan; M. Z. Hossain.
Good quality lands are degraded by water and wind erosion, loss of organic matter, water-logging and salinity in Bangladesh which decreases crop yield and biodiversity. Lands are also contaminated with heavy metals due to growing industrialization. There are lots of expensive methods for controlling soil erosion, soil salinity, and land degradation, which can not be achievable in developing countries. The environment-friendly vetiver grass is available all over Bangladesh and it is economically feasible to control land degradation.  Vetiver grass can also be used for other purposes, as mentioned in this paper, and poor people can earn money utilizing vetiver grass.  But most of the people are unaware of the utility of this natural resource and therefore,...
